Cellular and Molecular Modifications of Glutamate Receptors: Changes in Expression Patterns after CNS Injury.

Jean R. Wrathall, Ph.D., Georgetown University Medical Center , Washington , DC

Objectives

At the conclusion of the presentation, the participants will be able to:

•  List the major types of glutamate receptors in the normal brain and spinal cord and examples of how altered expression of different subtypes affects function.

•  Identify the methods through which altered expression of glutamate receptors has been studied experimentally.

•  Describe the results of studies on the relationship between altered glutamate receptor expression and cell death after CNS injury.

•  Describe the results of studies on the relationship between altered glutamate receptor expression and the development of pain after CNS injury.

•  Describe the results of studies on the relationship between altered glutamate receptor expression and partial recovery of function after SCN injury.
