2016 NNS Abstract Submissions

A total of 377 abstracts were submitted for NNS 2016.  This was the second highest number of submissions in the past 14 years.

The Abstract Committee has reviewed all submissions and notifications of acceptance are being sent out according to the timeline listed below.

A total of 373 abstracts were accepted for presentation at the 2016 meeting.

The Program Committee cordially invites you to submit an abstract for a contributed oral or poster presentation for the upcoming Neurotrauma symposium.Authors wishing to contribute papers must submit an abstract for review by the Program Committee.  All abstracts must be submitted electronically.


We strongly encourage all authors to familiarize themselves with the system PRIOR to the deadline date. The system will allow authors to submit abstracts (up to 350 words).  After the abstract has been accepted, authors will be able to view their abstract online in an abstract archive.  You may return at any time to edit your submission until the deadline date.


All abstract authors must be registered attendees of the symposium.  When registering, be sure to add the "abstract submission fee" to your registration.  Once your fees have been paid online, the abstract submission button will be activated.

Please note that the presenting author must register for the conference and submit the abstract.  Multiple submissions from one person on behalf of other presenters or their lab are NOT allowed.


     Members - $50 each       Non-Members - $100 each


The NNS Abstract Committee reviews and grades each abstract submission for quality, ethical guidelines and scientific merit. A blind grading process is used to ensure anonymity and equality.  From the online submissions, the Abstract Committee determines the qualified abstracts to be presented during the Data Blitz and Poster sessions.


The Abstract Committee will select papers from all submissions to be presented as posters during the Poster Sessions.  Please note that authors whose abstracts are selected for poster presentation will also be eligible to participate in the Data Blitz session.


The Abstract Committee will select 25 abstracts from all submissions to be presented orally during the Data Blitz session.  Each presenter will be limited to 1-3 slides and a maximum of 2 minutes of presentation time.


All student/trainee submissions are eligible to be considered for the Trainee Poster Competition.  

A total of 5 independent judges are assigned to review and score each trainee submission.  

The Top 24 highest-scoring student abstract submissions will be featured as the finalists in the Poster Competition and these posters will be displayed for the duration of the conference in a central location. 

All Poster Competition finalists will receive a final judging onsite at the conference during the first poster session on Monday.  In the event of a tie, judges will refer to the original abstract scores for the tiebreaker. 

All judges decisions are final. All poster finalists are requred to attend the Awards Ceremony, where they will be presented with a certificate of recognition and finalist trophy onstage.  The top five highest scoring finalists will each receive one of the NNS Trainee Poster Competition Awards as outlined below.


All accepted abstracts will be published electronically in the Journal of Neurotrauma issue immediately prior to the conference.

For 2016, all posters (including top 20 competition finalists) will be displayed on triangular kiosks.  

Each kiosk consists of 3 soft-sound panels, measuring 46" W x 40" H, and mounted on two legs per frame to form a triangular stand (6 legs per kiosk). Entire display kiosk is 72" high. Each kiosk takes 3 clips for numbering.  All posters must be created in PowerPoint using the landscape format, with a maximum width of 46” and a maximum height of 40”.

To encourage presentation of high quality basic science and clinical research at the National Neurotrauma Society Meeting, five awards will be offered for the top Trainee Poster Competition finalists with the highest onsite judging scores.  All Student Competition finalists will be recognized during the Awards Ceremony.  

The Trainee Poster Competition winners will receive:

  • An engraved art glass award 
  • $500 cash award from the National Neurotrauma Society
  • $400 GC for books from Southeast Medical Books
  • A one year subscription to the Journal of Developmental Neuroscience, published by Karger
  • A professional headshot to use as they start their career.  Headshots will be taken Wed. at 10:30 am.

Abstracts selected for presentation (either oral or poster) will be published in the Journal of Neurotrauma June issue.

Judging will occur during Poster Session IB.

Awards will be presented at the Awards Ceremony Dinner on Tuesday evening. Photos will be taken that evening.

AANS/CNS Poster Awards
  • Cranial Trauma Award 
  • Spinal Trauma Award

To encourage presentation of high quality clinical research at the National Neurotrauma Society Meeting, two awards will be offered for clinical research presented by a medical student, resident, fellow, or early-career attending within 3 years of completion of their residency.  

The recipient must be a member of either the AANS or CNS.   If the recipient is a medical student, resident, or fellow their research mentor must also be a member of either the AANS or CNS. 

The $1000 cash awards will honor outstanding abstracts presented as either oral posters or exhibited posters at the meeting judged on the basis of scientific merit, clinical relevance and innovation.  

One award will be given for cranial trauma and one for either spine or peripheral nerve trauma however the judges reserve the right to issue both awards in either category. 

Abstracts selected for presentation (either oral or poster) will be published in the Journal of Neurotrauma June issue.  

Judging will occur during Poster Session IB on Monday afternoon.  

Awards will be presented at the Awards Ceremony Dinner on Tuesday evening. Photos will be taken that evening and a complimentary headshot session will be offered at 10:30 am on Wednesday morning during the coffee break.

National Neurotrauma Society Travel Awards

NNS provides twenty (20) $500 travel awards each year to ensure students and international delegates are given every opportunity to attend the conference and present their work. Anyone who registers to attend the conference and also submits an abstract may apply for a travel grant.  Awards are based on financial need and merit. 

To apply for a travel award, you must register online, then submit an abstract in order to activate the travel award application section.    In the event your abstract is not accepted, a refund for your registration fee may be requested prior to May 31.
