Background:

The Camarillo Lab in the Stanford University Departments of Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Neurosurgery is hiring a postdoctoral position to advance our understanding on the mechanisms of mild traumatic brain injury. Our group has pioneered the use of wearable instrumented mouthguards in athletes and soldiers. We
have discovered specific vulnerable areas of the head that translate into deep brain strains that are associated with blood-brain barrier disruption and axonal injury. Our translational goal is to develop biologically based injury criteria that can be used for standards in sports equipment, automotive, aerospace, military, and beyond. Our approach is to generate hypotheses from computational and anthropomorphic models
then test in large animal models and in humans. For example, we are seeking to reproduce stress and strain patterns we have measured from human injuries in animals so we can understand the precise biophysical mechanisms of concussion. Our research has been covered by TED.com, NY Times, Washington Post, NPR, and other major media outlets. We are seeking a talented and motivated individual to lead projects and mentor students in our collaborative and interdisciplinary research program.
 
Required Experience:

  • Ph.D. in engineering or quantitative discipline
  • Interest or experience in hands-on biomechanical large animal experiments
  • Multiple first author peer reviewed publications in top journals
  • Computational modeling in at least 1-2 of the following areas:
  • Finite element models
  • Rigid body modeling
  • Machine learning models
  • Statistical models

Desired experience:
● Sensors, including accelerometers and gyroscopes
● Imaging, especially CT and or MRI
● Neuroscience
● IRB and/or IACUC protocols
● Computer vision
● Grant proposal writing
